A "loopback test of a communication interface means connecting the
interface output to the input, sending a known signal, and confirming
that the correct signal is received.

With some kinds of interfaces, this can only successfully be done
by pugging a specially-wired "loopback connector" into the cable
socket. However, the presence of the word "Internal" in the message
would appear to indicate that the necessary connections exist inside
the card and can be enabled by the diagnostic software.
Note, though, that this could be a misleading message. And the
requirement that the cable be plugged in suggests that such a
connector *may* actually be required in order to run a loopback test.
(The card may see some signals when the cable is connected that
convine it that there *might* be a loopback connector installed.)

Do these cards have LEDs which display the link status? Which ones
are on and which off?
