i don't have any hard and fast views on these as yet, but to throw three
other items into the cholesterol/heart disease soup:
1. copper. one theory says: since copper is involved in elastin production,
a shortage of copper weakens blood vessel walls. in compensation the body
makes a 'temporary' solution by padding the walls with more cholesterol.
best source of copper seems to be oysters.
2. inadequate dietary cholesterol. in compensaton, the body's cells start
making it. this includes those on the arterial walls. so it builds up there.
the issue I'm more certain about is Om-3s. seems to be good evidence of them
lowering blood pressure. One of them, DPA, seems to work better than the
others for lowering cholesterol. DPA is found more in sea mammals - whale
and seal.
