WORM.EXPLOREZIP VIRUS ALERT
Microsoft recently posted an alert to warn users about the ExploreZip
Worm virus. This virus uses MAPI commands on Windows-based computers
to propagate itself. It e-mails itself out as an attachment with the
file name Zipped_files.exe. The body of the e-mail message may appear
to come from someone you know and contains the following text:
Hi [Recipient Name]!
I received your email and I shall send you a reply ASAP. Till then,
take a look at the attached zipped docs. Sincerely [Name].
The ExploreZip Worm virus determines the recipients and which names to
use. In addition, it uses a subject line based on the contents of the
user's inbox. If the user executes the attachment, he or she receives
the following fake error message:
Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If this
file is part of a ZIP format backup set, insert the last disk of the
backup set and try again. Please press F1 for help.
You should employ standard methods of virus protection to protect your
environment from this virus. You should update virus-scanning programs
to the latest versions and take any other appropriate steps to prevent
the virus from entering your environment. You can direct specific
questions regarding your virus software's ability to detect and clean
this virus to your antivirus software vendor. The following sites
contain additional information on the ExploreZip Worm virus:

specify a different name or location for your document, saving the
document in Works format. Then open the document in Word and save it

PROBLEMS LAUNCHING ACCESS
Are you one of the 1.5 million who upgraded to Windows 98? Or are you considering making the big move? If you are, and you use Microsoft Access 97, you should be aware of a potential problem. When upgrading to Windows 98 or installing Access 97 on a Windows 98 system, you could have trouble launching Access. When you attempt to launch the application, you may receive the following error message: "Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine." Fortunately, Microsoft has already released a fix for this. This file contains a tool that corrects the problem and enables you to run Microsoft Access 97 successfully. You'll find the file on the Microsoft Web site at the following address: http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2c2061%2ctw-bug1117%2c00.html

REMOTE ACCESS SESSION PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS 95 AND 98
Having trouble with system hang-ups when you try to create a remote access connection that uses scripting? Microsoft has identified a problem that may cause your computer to stop responding when it's establishing remote access using programs such as CompuServe's PAL. Microsoft says the problem occurs if a remote access component is not properly initializing a local variable. This causes your computer to read large portions of memory, including the display memory area, resulting in a lockup. Microsoft has a fix that corrects this problem, but has not fully tested it. Therefore, Microsoft recommends applying the fix only if this specific problem affects you severely. Otherwise, wait for the next Service Pack, which will make the fix available. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix.

MICROSOFT VISUAL FOXPRO 5.0 PATCH

MICROSOFT MESSAGE QUEUE SERVER BUG
Microsoft has identified a problem you may face when you apply the year 2000 update from the full download version of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. The problem results in uninstallation of Microsoft Message Queue Server from your computer, which means the loss of all messages on that computer, in addition to the removal of the computer and its queues from the Message Queue Information Store (MQIS) database. Unfortunately, reinstalling Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) won't recover the messages or redefine the queues previously associated with the computer. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Y2ksetup.exe file included with the full download version of the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. The resolution to this problem isn't a simple one. Microsoft recommends the following actions. If you applied the full download version of Service Pack 4, removing your MSMQ, you should reference the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for recovery information: ARTICLE-ID: Q197534 TITLE: FIX: Recovering Messages & Redefining Queues after Applying SP4

When using any of these products, you won't be warned when opening potentially harmful attachments, which puts you at risk of file damage from a malicious attachment. To address this issue, Microsoft released a mail attachment security add-on for its mail clients. This security add-on presents a warning before you open an attachment. The add-on will allow you to disable or bypass the warning for selected file types that you feel comfortable opening without warning, as well as for executable code signed using Authenticode. MISSING PRINT FILES IN AM-TAX SOFTWARE
Here's another tip for those tax preparers who use AM Software's AM-Tax. AM Software included these forms in the Early Bird because AM had converted them from the previous year. However, the company hadn't released final versions of these forms, making the necessary laser printer files unavailable. The final update to AM-Tax includes these print files. You can learn more about the update on the AM Software Web site at http://www.amtax.com/supportf.htm

CHILD TAX CREDIT IN AM-TAX SOFTWARE
Here's another tip for those tax preparers who use AM Software's AM-Tax. The Early Bird Edition of the AM-Tax tax preparation software may cause errors on Child Tax Credit calculations, resulting in miscalculation of Line 5 by a factor of 100. AVOIDING PROBLEMS WITH 3D STUDIO
Autodesk, maker of 3D Studio, recently identified a problem you may experience when launching, running, or exiting 3D Studio Max or 3D Studio Viz. These "transport errors" may occur on systems running Windows 95 or Windows 98. To avoid the errors, Autodesk recommends that you disable network rendering within 3D Studio Max or 3D Studio Viz. Simply add a single space, hyphen, and a lowercase N ( -n) to the shortcut command line. With network rendering disabled, you can still read from directories on the network and write to other network directories. The -n switch disables only the program's ability to assign the task of rendering to other computers. For more details on this issue, visit the Autodesk Web site at http://www.autodesk.com/support/techdocs/td80/td805458.htm

VISUAL FOXPRO INSTALLATION BUG
Having problems installing Visual FoxPro on your Windows 95 system? If so, you may be running into a known bug in the installation program. The problem only occurs when you install Visual FoxPro on a computer running Windows 95, causing the application setup to crash with the following messages: "MSDADC.DLL was unable to register itself in the system registry" and "Setup was not completed successfully."Microsoft says the problem is the result of an incompatibility between the version of the msdadc.dll file that setup installs, and the existing version of the Ole32.dll file on the target computer. You can work around this issue by installing Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) for Windows 95 or Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. You can install DCOM for Windows 95 (DCOM95) from http://www.microsoft.com/oledev
The updated version of the setup wizard has fixed this bug. For more information on the update, go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/downloads/updates.asp

MICROSOFT WORKS CONVERSION ERROR
If you attempt to convert your Microsoft Works 4.x document to Word format, you may receive the following error message: "There was a problem converting the document. Cannot save the document C:\Path\file name.doc." Then open the document in Word and save it again as a Word document.

VISUAL C++, ATL REGISTRY PROBLEM
Microsoft recently identified a problem with the Microsoft Active Template Library (ATL) 2.1 included with Visual C++ 32-bit Edition 5.0. The problem occurs when you access the ATL Object Wizard dialog box via the Insert New ATL Object menu option. When you do, the dialog box comes up empty, indicating that no wizards are available. This problem results from the Visual C++ installation, in which all ATL Object Wizards are registered in the Registry under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ATLWizard. The problem occurs because settings under HKEY_CURRENT_USER aren't visible to users when they're logging in under a different user. The problem also occurs if you install Visual C++ under one user and log in as another. To resolve this problem, other user log-ins that need to access Visual C++ on the same machine need to have the same Registry setting as that listed above. To add this entry, log in under the account that installed Visual C++, then launch Regedit. Next, highlight the entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ATLWizard and export this entry to a file by selecting Registry, Export Registry File from the menu. next, log in as the other user who will be using Visual C++. Finally, double-click the REG file to merge it with the Registry.
