  Pinging itself will confirm that TCP/IP is *installed* correctly,
but sidesteps the three critical configuration items (address, subnet
mask, gateway address) -- which should be okay *if* the machine can
reach DHCP.
  (If the machine cannot ping itself as 127.0.0.1, TCP/IP is broken
and should be reinstalled, but success at this point isn't quite a
verification of the "settings".)
