M.E. C" asked:
What do you think about salt intake for vigorous exercisers?.....do you
think there is adequate salt occuring naturally in foods to compensate for
the loss? I tend to crave salt after sweating so much.

My reply:
Your body requires the potassium for functioning and far more of it than
sodium. All the sodium you need (and potassium for that matter) can be
obtained from unsalted, whole foods. If you crave salt it is likely that
you are used to eating a certain amount of salt, but it does not mean you
need to replace the salt you have lose. Similary studies which calculated
sodium excretion of test subjects have mistakenly believed that sodium
losses indicated the need for replacement of that amount. In actuality,
high sodium excretion is merely a side effect of a high sodium intake. Many
active primtives around the world have eaten diets devoid of added salt.
Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, those provide elements your body needs.
