Ok.  My turn to chime in.  Jun is a frequent contributor, and I value his
opinion.  My experience, however, has been slightly different.  While I
haven't really done a lot of testing for speed, I have found the overall
reliability of both WD and Maxtor drives to be about equal.  In the last
three years I have had three Maxtor's and two WD drives come to me doa.  I
have never had a Maxtor that was working before die on me later.  I have had
one WD die after working previously.  In all I have probably installed over
500 systems during this three year period, with about 100 of those systems
containing Quantum drives, and the rest being a fairly even mix of WD and
Maxtor (I've had SEVERAL Quantum's die or arrive doa).

When I have the choice, I usually pick Maxtor.  I like to try and save my
customers money, and Maxtor is usually the best price.  Given my equal luck
between the two, it's a no-brainer for me.

Please keep in mind, every computer technician will have varying
experiences.  WD used to be at the top of the food chain with Seagate
several years ago.  WD has dropped a little bit in their reliability, and
Seagate's has fallen through the floor (again, in my experience).  The only
other large deciding factor for me has been the fact that the customer
service I have received from Maxtor has been far superior to WD.
