Hello Group;

Our Fujitsu Livebook laptop (win98SE) has developed a boot problem:
windows never complets loading on first boot, but starts up all right on
re-boot. The laptop is using A/C power. Since windows finally boots up and
works all right, I assume that it could be a hardware problem.

Is it a sign of failing hard disk, inadequate power or too many apps
loading on startup? Note: no new app was added recently (the symptoms have
developed last week). Just before this problem started the laptop could
not boot at all: always ended with BSOD (0E error) just as the windows'
icons started to appear. The Blue Screen started appearing when the owner
installed F-Prot with Norton Guard and McAfee VShield running.
Un-installing all the 3 AV apps, re-booting and installing F-prot
eliminated the Blue 0E Screen and made the laptop operational, but with a
nuisance of having to re-start it on cold boot.

Here's how the Livebook owner discribes the symptoms:

"When you turn it on for the first time, it freezes while loading windows,
windows desktop blue goes from light to dark blue, the icons light up but
the windows logo in the top right hand corner does not come up and the in
the lower right hand corner the set of little icons does not come up. I
turn it off for 10 seconds and then restart it and windows completely
loads."

Any thoughts?

TIA,
Irena. ([log in to unmask])
