Yes, absolutely necessary.
Both must have User Accounts and Passwords set up, and no 'spaces' in the
user names or passwords.
examples: johnglen      NOT    john glen
The Workgroup names must be identical as well on both machines. Again, no
spaces.
Probably best to use the SAME username on both machines if possible.
