I think you just answered your own question. If you
want to connect to the internet using Linux, you need
to go with an external. You can do internal but, be
prepared for a lot of work, compling the kernal, the
makefiles, etc.

If you're comfortable and linmodems says your modem
works, great, if not external is probably your best
bet. I hate having an internal modem myself, i use my
old 28.8 external under linux because it works. If I
need to do something intense, I boot back into a
Wintel OS, you might consider doing that, buying a
cheap external that linux supports and sticking with
your modem in your Wintel OS.
