Just for the record, Western Digital has been selling full retail hard drives
with "one year" marked on the box for a year or two. (I saw them mostly
at a walk-in CompUSA store.) It has always been a question of where you
got it and what model it was/is. (I'm not referring to ANY type of OEM or
white or brown box type drive.)
WD is just making it "harder" or more expensive to get the three years now...

A quick check of a major retailer's web site (CDW) shows that IBM, Seagate
and WD are offering a three year warranty; Maxtor is offering a one-year
warranty. I would definitely go with a three year warranty, even if it
costs a bit extra.
