Others may have additional information, but it sounds to me like your
battery is dead. The computer configuration settings are stored in CMOS
(Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) memory which uses very little
power and has a battery to keep it alive. When the battery finally wears
out, your settings are lost and the computer may have difficulty getting
started. Where the battery is, and what kind you have depends on the
motherboard. Some have a lithium coin cell, others have it included in a
Dallas Semiconductor clock module that looks like a very fat integrated
circuit about 3/4 inch wide, 1 inch long, and about 3/4 inch thick. Hope

It takes multiple bootings to get windows to finally load and when it
begins, there is an error message that says "CMOS checksum error" and
"F1 to load Defaults" when I hit F1 windows will finally load.
