<< Dogs seem to have no problem eating once a day. >>
Ian Billinghurst, the Australian vet who advocates the
bones and raw food (BARF) diet, recommends a variable
feeding schedule -- sometimes 1 meal a day, sometimes
2, and occsionally a fasting day (providing plenty of
fresh water of course). He says feeding the dog at the
same time every day (and worse, the same food every
day) is artificial and unnatural. The idea is to try
to recreate as much as possible the way their wild
ancestors would have eaten. Therefore, when the dog
receives a large meal of meat and bones, it would be a
good idea to follow it with a 24-hour fast.
He also points out some of his clients believe that
for maximum health, dogs are best fed every second or
third day, especially when they're very sedentary.
Of course, this would only apply to dogs that are
being fed a "species appropriate" diet rather than the
typically high carbohydrate commercial formulas.
