I only ever install externals for several reasons.
I have lost 2 modems due to lightening damage but the mainboard was never
damaged, If they had been internal I might quite likely have lost a
mainboard too.
It is more likely that you will need your mainboard slots than your serial
port
One other advantage of an external is that you can see from the activity of
the lights, exactly what is happening, eg: you might think a page is
failing to load but a glance at the modem tells you if data is still
comming in.
I dont think there is much to pick and choose speed wise, you are more
likely to be limited by the quality of your phone line.
