I sent a message to this list, but I didn't see it flying out again, so at
the risk of being repetetive, I'll somarize what I found with this critter,
plus some new thoughts.
It came this morning, and it's exactly as advertized at:
http://www.palomar-engineers.com
The unit is really basic, no elaborate gizmoes, just a metal box with 2 coax
connectors on the back, and a light and switch on the front, plus a battery
clip for the small 9 volter needed to drive it.
Well, the knob on the front turns the unit on or off. In the off mode it's
in pass-through mode so you can transmit freely through it.
When you turn it on, you get a noise in the receiver that is really strong,
and for the most part wipes out all incoming signals, so no difficulties
working out whether it's on, or not.
The idea is, you tune your antenna tuner till the noise reduces.
Someone posted earlier she couldn't get hers to work. I had the same
probelem initally. You need to turn the rf gain down so you don't get your
agc giving you a false indicator.
Then the tuner tunes out the noise, and you keep varying the settings till
the noise is at its weakest.
I tried this thing on 80 meters, a band I could never set up properly on my
ft-101z. Set the tuner, and raised an amateur in mid-wales some 150 miles
away with a good s-9 signal report.
Got a good audio report, and held the qso for a half-hour or so.
Far as I can tell this is by happen-stance one of the most accessable items
you could buy for your amateur radio problem sorting tool kit.
I bought one of the noise bridges once, and found I couldn't use it, and
thought that a unit like this one would have been real useful. Now it's
here.
