Hey Don,

If it looked sorta like a brick and the battery was inside (not easily
replaceable), had several switches below the keypad--offset, lamp,
keypad lock, and so on--and a three-position switch on top for power
level--that sounds like the ST-144. I remember that rig having pretty
good receive audio, but I also remember having to really close-talk
it. Oh yeah, ten memories, also.
