To me, good operating practice means following the traditions, whatever they
are, of whatever mode you're operating.  Calling CQ on a repeater has never
been traditional and all the books that I've seen recommend the same thing
... simply come on the machine and announce your call with no CQ, no
"monitoring", or anything else.
