The way I use to test USB is to plug anything else into the USB -
speakers, game controller, storage device, webcam, whatever. If it
works, then USB is OK. USB devices are common so you should be able to
borrow one from your friends with no problem at all.

This does not solve/check the problem of USB conflicts between
"greedy" USB devices and OS/driver-level conflicts.
