Oops, just saw this finally get posted to the list. After a day's worth of
searching yesterday, I found a technical/hardware manual in PDF format
buried within an obscure corner of IBM's website, and in the middle of its
741 pages were about 12 that illustrated the order and procedure for getting
the case apart. After that, the job went fine, and the repaired machine is
just about ready to go back to the 9-year-old, after we have a little lesson
on how to take care of power connectors and sockets. The little broken
plastic collar around the receptacle, worth maybe 59 cents on its own, had
to be replaced as part of the whole card, which cost his dad almost $300,
not including my time. Fortunately for the kid, his dad is my lawyer, so we
barter computer work for legal work, and both sides get something of a
bargain, at least on the labor cost.

The list's lag time was enough for me to get the problem solved on my own
this time ... ;-)
