My soldering gun gets hot very fast so I can usually line it up before I
pull the trigger, but also, if that won't work or if I need a low watage
soldering Iron I set everything up wiht neatle nose plyers and then just
follow them down with the soldering iron, as long as everything is set up
right at the end and you can tell where you are by feel, that works, then I
generally can tell when it is hot enough by the smell, it will begin to
usually and then I know I am done and if I check and am not then I try again
a little longer. Haven't messed anything up that way yet and I do Coax
connecters, some circut boards and lots of other things over here, made my
own antenna switch actually. There is a little more to if that is tough to
explain, but that is the part I can explain. I have never got a single burn
from it either, nock on wood,I just know what not to touch and that works
out for me. I can solder a PL259 that looks so perfect you would swear it
had to be a professional job.
