A couple of people have recommended the Schwarzbein Principle diet book,
but I can't agree. I read much of it in Barnes & Noble recently (but I
didn't buy it because I could tell already it wouldn't work for me).
Schwarzbein replaces the Nutrition Guide Pyramid with her Schwarzbein Square
-- which includes dairy and grains, right?
When I used to eat grains or dairy products I'd get strong cravings for
more of the same, so I'm very glad I quit those foods entirely (like
NeanderThin recommends). If I'd tried to just "cut back" on them, I don't
think I'd feel as healthy as I do now, and what's more, I think it would have
been doomed to failure from the start if I'd tried to merely "cut back" on
dairy, grains, sugar, beans or potatoes. So I'd hate to see anyone recommend
a diet like that to anyone else.
As for another comment that "The truth is that if you live on the planet
Earth today and you do not eat Paleo then you probably don't want to do so.
The information is out there in so many forms. Even Dr Atkins is close
enough for the normal SAD folks." -- I can't agree with that comment either.
I'm 34, I read a lot, and I read in a variety of different genres and fields,
and even though I've been interested in health and diet for years, I'd never
heard of Paleolithic Nutrition until I stumbled across a mention of it on an
acquaintance's webpage. The brief overview of it made perfect sense to me,
and I started trying to eat according to Ray's "Ten Commandments" that day.
(A few days later I bought "NeanderThin" -- easy to read and understand, it's
actually entertaining and not too thick, and it's only $6.99 in paperback --
and I've been eating Paleo ever since.) But I don't think it's widely known
at all. Of the dozens of people who've asked me about my new diet, only
three seemed to have heard about it before.
And I don't think Atkins is "close enough" -- at least it wasn't for me.
I tried the Atkins Diet for about three months a few years ago, I felt dizzy
and weak most of the time, and I "dieted" my way from the 150's to 165 pounds
by eating what Atkins says to eat.
