The Japanese eat raw sardines; in fact, there are specialty dishes from
some regions in the fishing season. I saw a Japanese quiz show entirely on
sardines a week or so ago, with numerous individuals sharing recipes.
Sashimi was prevalent, but also a mash of sardines, guts and all, with
wasabi and daikon. One claim made was that sardines contain or assist in
creation of serotonin, and therefore are useful to control stress. This is
not something I had heard before.
