ACADEMY CONFERENCE
June 15th, 2002
On SATURDAY, JUNE 15th, 2002 , from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Academy for the
Study of the Psychoanalytic Arts will be sponsoring a conference in
which Dr. David Walker, Ph.D. has offered to present and open to
consideration a paper which lends itself well to the exploration of issues
central to the spirit and mission of the Academy. His paper is entitled:
Speaking in the borrowed language:
Mental Health as an Agent of Cultural Oppression
Drawing from his experience as a psychologist working with the sovereign
Yakama Indian Nation, Dr. Walker will share with us his observations of a
dominant culture's efforts to change, modernize, medicate and otherwise
'colonize' the life experience of Native Americans.
Members of the Academy will consider professional parallels in which a
culturally dominant biomedical story for the addressing of human problems in
living (that which is "native" to life) is increasingly changing,
modernizing, and even silencing the voices of those therapists and clients
who are interested in understanding and exploring personal
meanings. Conference participants will have the rich opportunity to
informally share and discuss ideas and experiences of interest.
The afternoon's format includes a break with refreshments. We encourage all
members, their guests, and those in the community who might be interested, to
attend what promises to be a unique and exciting meeting.
Conference Fees: Academy Members $10.00; Non-members $15.00; Students $5:00
