Presumably you either received or downloaded an update for the HP software
for Windows Me. I have an HP 6300, and although I don't have Windows Me
(for exactly the reason you are writing in), there is an update on the HP
web site for setting it up in Windows Me. Are you connecting it to an LPT
port? Is there anything between the scanner and the port like maybe an
external drive (Iomega or something else?). It would be hard to diagnose
your problem based on your posting, and if Gateway and HP can't do it with
you on the phone, you can see how hard it would be this way. For starters
if you haven't already done so, go to www.hp.com and navigate your way to
downloads for your scanner. Download the software for Win Me. If you've
already done that, then make sure the scanner is connected directly to the
LPT port, or if have something else connected to it that you get a Belkin
IEEE1284 compliant multiple port box. Model F1U123-KIT would work for this.
If you already have the scanner connected directly to the LPT port then just
delete this posting. If the scanner is new and neither HP nor Gateway can
get it to work, you should get HP tech support to authorize a return so you
can get something else.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Scanner Suggestions

Well folks, I still don't have my HP4100Cse scanner installed. I have
communicated with HP and Gateway and neither of their suggestions have
worked
<grrrrr>. And neither of them seems to know why it is not working. So,
does
anyone out there have a flatbed scanner that is working great with
WindowsME?
I mean one that installed without any problems and is working just fine. I
don't want anymore problems. I have spent days trying to make this scanner
work and it is just not going to happen. I would prefer a USB. I have
thought about the Epson 1200U. Does anyone have one working with WindowsME?
I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, I don't use a scanner that much,
mostly sharing pictures through email etc., so I don't want to pay a lot for
one.

Thank you,
Susan Hays
