Lewis;
Compaq usually uses the F10 key  to access bios
turn the machine on with the F10 key depressed.
The USB port should show up in device manager.

There is usually an order which the scanner and software are installed
Many times you are to install the software first, then hook the scanner up.
check HP website for install instructions.
