I remember a similar conversation a number of years ago. A mother of a child
with a disability called, saying that as her daughter was entering Junior
High, she wanted to buy her a computer. And she wanted it to last through
High School.
I asked her if she could remember the computer she worked on five years ago.
She said that she could. I asked if she thought that she would want to use
that computer today? She agreed that a five year life cycle was probably
not reasonable. An eight year life cycle is rediculous.

The superintendent of public schools in Henrico County, Virginia,
wants to distribute Apple iBooks to 42,000 students and teachers over the
next couple of years.

In San Lorenzo, California, 8,000 students from grades four through 12
will get a laptop that they can keep until they graduate.
