As it happens, there is an add-in for Microsoft Word that does reading.
It is called, I think, the Word Reader, and is on the Office CD in the
extensions folder.  You can add this to your Mac, highlight any or all
of a document, and read it.

It doesn't highlight as it reads, but it will read for you.
