Lew: Have you obtain the latest drivers for your scanner?

If it is a HP scanner, often all traces of the old installation has to be
removed before the new drivers are installed.

There are generally two USB ports. One is for hubs and the other for single
machines. Make sure your scanner is plugged into the correct port.

Does the light on your scanner come on? It might not necessarily be a
hardware bit software problem. I don't mean the USB drivers but whatever
program you are using with your scanner might not be able to 'see' it.

You can make a quick/rough check on your USB ports in device manager,
however, this is not a foolproff way of checking that any device is working
properly.
