I had the 1220P for 3 years, but never saw that happen. What does Umax say about it?  Did you check their FAQ's on their web site?  Did you send them an e-mail?  Are you using Vistascan's interface to scan, or are you scanning from a document manager?  Is the scanner connected to a passthrough port in another device that is directly connected to the LPT port?  If so, try connecting the scanner directly to the LPT port.
