NVRAM is Non-Volatile RAM, meaning it won't lose its contents with a boot
because the battery is keeping it refreshed.  Removing the battery was
correct.  Now you need to replace the jumper if you didn't earlier, and go
into cmos and load defaults, I usually pick 'optimum' if the selection is
present.  Then modify cmos to your preferences.
Remember to save cmos and exit, and your on your way.

I just came in to a computer from a friend that could
not make it run. It is a pentium II 233 MMX. I know
nothing about the motherboard, except that it is a
socket 7. When I  power up the computer it booted up
the point where it asked for a password to enter the
setup. The Bios are a Phoenix version. To make this
short I couldn't come up with password. So I tried to
reset the cmos jumper, didn't work. Then I pulled the
battery out for about 20 minutes. Good job, that
worked! Now I can get to the system bios. Now I am
having a pre boot error which states. " NVRAM cleared
by jumper"
I have changed out the dimm ram same error. Any ideas?
