And here I thought you did all that housework in honour of your sister's
holiday visit. At least, that's what your wife told me. Hmmmph!

but maintaining our homes is a chore that we put off as long as we can...

Oh, yes. In November the insurance company said they would not re-insure our
house unless we upgrade the rear roof and clean the pile of rubbish (read:
Ken's salvage wood pile). They gave us a drop dead date. We got through
that, and threw in more maintenance items and filled a 10 yd dumpster w/
"rubbish" (a pleasant family yard project). We had the entire roof ripped &
re-shingled. The week before Xmas I rebuilt the stairs to the basement... it
had been hampering the laundry process ever since the next to bottom tread
fell out below Kathy. Four days before Xmas she said the furnace smelled
funny & called the maintenance service... they condemned the machine and
refused to turn it back on again. We got a new furnace installed the same
day, I sent out the check this week, right after I made sure the final (?)
tuition check cleared. I would say we got 60% of our list of maintenance
chores taken care of within a few weeks... meaning, there is more to go.
