Deb,

I have never tried the scanner head in my printer. They are $80 or $90.
You can get a flatbed scanner for less than that these days. The scanner
head will only work to a resolution of 600 dpi and the printer will only
accept paper up to 8" wide. Flatbeds (even the really cheap ones) will
support higher resolution and work much faster, but they are not the essence
of portability. I'll have to get back to you on the color print test. I
have had the color head in the storage canister for a year and a half and the
ink had clotted up. Sounds like as good a reason as any to perform 'deferred
maintenance'.
