Hmmm ... I used on of those Cleg transceivers at a club station.  We
eventually modified it for FM and, as Don indicates of the Communicators,
slope-detected using the a.m. detector.  (That was a bit easier with
wide-band FM than with narrow-band, though).

One of my friends at the time used a TDQ WW2-surplus 100-watt
xtal-controlled a.m. transmitter used to communicate with aircraft and a
National NC-300 receiver with two-meter converter.  man, did he lay down a
signal for that time!  And the receiver combo was quite hot!
