I have 3 hard drives, two Western Digitals and a Quantum, and all are listed
as generic drives.  The BIOS recognized them, they all work in Windows 98,
so the name is inconcequential.  In the BIOS it shows their names and serial
numbers, so it makes no difference what windows 98 shows.  It isn't even a
matter of aesthetics since Device Manager is not always displayed, and it
would only matter then if you care what the name of a working drive is.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Hard Disk Name


In Device Manager, Win98, I noticed hard drive might be listed as Quantum
(and model no.), or  Generic Type 47 Disk Drive, or just Disk Drive. If
one or the other of latter, can exact name be restored? Does name make a
difference in performance, or is this just a matter of aesthetics?

(There is no "Hard Drive" in list of hardware in Add New Hardware
Wizard.)
