Here are the replies to my request for GF-friendly and vegan-friendly places
to eat in the Asheville, NC area. There is even a bed-and-breakfast
possibility. Thank you so much to all who replied. I hope the info is useful
to others as well, even if you're not vegan!

For vegan, you would definitely be in luck at The Laughing Seed
Cafe, in downtown Asheville 828-252-3445, whether or not they are good w/ gf
items, I don't know.
Other places you might check into:
The Uptown Cafe 828-253-2158
Cafe on the Square 828-251-5565
South Side Cafe " -274-4413
Wildeflower Restaurant 277-1010
Flying Frog Cafe 254-9411
There is also a health/natural food store in Westgate Shopping Center called
Earthfare, it has a fair selection of gf items, as well as a buffet type
cafe. There are numerous bed and breakfasts. I recently stayed at a sort
of old fashioned motor court place called the Forest Manor Inn, on Hiway 25,
not far from the Biltmore Estate. It is owned by a delightful older couple,
Lloyd and Leone Kirk. It is nicely landscaped, the rooms are modest but
very clean. They do have a continental breakfast, but I doubt gf items.
The number is 800-866-3531, www.forestmanorinn.com

My daughter and I (who are both celiac) were in Asheville about 3 weeks
ago. We ate at a great Italian local place called Trevi or Trevis. It
was near the Biltmore mansion and was recommended by our hotel clerk.
We weren't eating vegetarian, but they had a large menu as best we recall.

there is always the Laughing Seed on Wall
Street and Max and Rosie's Cafe on Lexington.

Asheville's wonderful, and for it's location is very veggie friendly.
There's a co-op there (south side of town, by the French Broad River i
think). My favorite nice-dinner restaurant is the Flying Frog--great
eclectic food and you can call ahead to check GF recipes as well as
veggie/vegan options--they've been very accommodating for me in the past.
There's also a great lunch spot called The Laughing Seed--very
vegan-friendly and they also took a small GF-request from me to switch an
entirely corn tortilla for a flour tortilla. Also a good tapas bar called
Zampa's (i think)--great food, but i can't remember how much GF-veg stuff
was available (i eat a little seafood). Check out the website
www.asheville.com if you haven't already.
