  Because of the additional ".", the DNS change is a wee bit more
involved than just a "record" -- an actual DNS subdomain will need to
be created.  The ISP should be able to do that; if they're getting
mixed stories, it may be that their ISP doesn't *want* to do that
for some reason.
  The result will be that connections can be made to www.abc.ca and
to www.xyz.abc.ca.  It is really simple to have these be aliases of
the same site -- just have DNS point them to the same IP address.
And it is really simple to have them point to different machines, by
giving them different addresses.

  What will involve a bit of work on their server is if they want
these names to resolve to different IIS sites on the same server.
IIS can do that, but it's been long enough since I set one up to do
that that I cannot recite from memory the specifics of making it
work.
