Suggestion:

Presuming you have got your BIOS straightened out about which drive is
your boot drive(s), Load Fdisk for your new drive. Ensure that fdisk
isn't 'looking at' your old C:\ drive. Delete any/all logical drives - in
reverse order, from extended drives down to the DOS/primary boot drive.
When you have a "clean" harddrive, start over with FDisk, first creating
a DOS primary partition/boot drive (C:\), size depending upon how you
plan to partition the new 4G drive, if at all.

If you are going to only boot from the new drive (ie, not dual boot), it
might help to disconnect the old HD until you are ready to reinstall it?
