My understanding is that win98 uses 64MB of ram directly, & the next
64MB via caching. Anything else actually degrades performance [?!!] ;P

My experience of [the above] has been similar. Also, do you have the VIA
4-in-1's installed? They affect pci performance, including drives/etc.

For an actual real-work benchmark, try the [free] sysoft sandra.

Finally, if you're running multiple applications and [assuming] that
more-processor = more-performance, that assumption fails in
non-multithreaded-optimized OS's like win98. Win98's not designed to
'force' reluctant applications to "share" processor resources
gracefully; MP3 players like winamp & musicmatch often take too much of
the "pie" in my experience. WinNT/2K would be better for this
requirement; my Athlon 1.2GHz runs full-speed both on single-app's and
multiple tasks, in win2K spk1.
