I have been buying generic External Modems for years now from a company
called Jetway! You might try a search for them, or check with a local
reseller. They usually sell in the $70.00 range retail (US)! I have sold
tons of these, and they are reliable and cheap!!!
As far as the Winmodems, I totally agree that they are next to worthless
when compared to an external device!!! I know this can become a heated
topic, but this is just my personal preference. I have been trying to
install ISA modems, w/jumpers instead of PCI WinModems, But.... many new
Main Board are phasing out ISA slots, so whenever possible, I try to sell an
external one. Even the USR (3Com) PCI Winmodems are not that good in many
cases.
Good Luck in your search!!!!

Subject: [PCBUILD] External modems
I have had nothing but problems with mine and I have tried several the
most
common problem being that it just simply vanishes from the system for no
apparent reason. I have tried updating the driver and I have even manually
set the IRQ to no avail. I have tried this with different internal modems
and get the same thing even with different mother boards. I have tried
PCI
and ISA type and if it isn't vanishing it isn't working properly I have an
old 33.6 modem and it works well but I would like to get a 56k version. I
am
jaded enough now that I won't use a winmodem ever again and I want to get
away from internal modems for good. I would just like to see what are the
better one's
Thanks,
Brendhan Horne
