Graham,
I have had this exact same problem on Gateway machines running Windows 98
with an integrated sound card. It has to do with sharing interrupts. When
I loaded Windows 2000 Professional on the same machine the problem was
completely erradicated. The interrupt sharing for Windows 2000 Professional
works much better than in Windows 98. This may not be the issue, but it's
worth looking into.
