Relics reveal first Britons' early arrival

THE history of the human occupation of Britain may
be 200,000 years older than archaeologists had believed.
Digs in East Anglia and the West Country suggest that
the first people took up residence up to 700,000 years
ago. Until now, it was calculated that humans first
wandered across what is now the North Sea 450,000-
500,000 years ago.
