I think everyone should find this interesting. It's an
excerpt from an email I received from Men's Health:

Myth #2: People are getting fatter because they aren't
following the USDA guidelines.

People are getting fatter, but it may be because of
the USDA guidelines, not in spite of them. According
to the USDA, in the time period from 1970 to 1994,
Americans have increased their average daily caloric
intake from 3,300 calories to 3,800 calories. That's
enough to gain a pound a week. And an analysis of the
American diet shows that despite popular opinion,
we're eating more fruit and vegetables, and less red
meat, butter, and whole milk. So even though people
are consuming more of the foods that are recommended
by the USDA, and less of the so-called bad stuff, the
average guy is still gaining weight. Plus, consumption
of the foods in the "bread and cereal" group that make
up the base of the pyramid have risen as well -- rice
consumption has increased 191 percent, flour and
cereal products consumption have increased 48 percent,
and corn flour and corn products consumption have
increased 391 percent.

Here are the changes in other popular foods:
Red meat               -20 percent
Poultry                +92 percent
Eggs                   -23 percent
Whole milk             -67 percent
Low fat milk          +167 percent
Butter                 -20 percent
Margarine              -20 percent
Fresh vegetables       +24 percent
Fresh fruit            +32 percent

I find it interesting that the decrease in the
so-called "fattening foods" and the increase in the
so-called "lean or light foods" has resulted in a 500
cal per day increase. Something's obviously not adding
up.
