Tomatoes and peppers are a late introduction. Italian cooking, among others
including French, is modern and not like it used to be. People used to think
tomatoes were poisonous.
I did not realize the problem I have with these foods until I went on a low
carb paleo diet. I still had some problems and discovered, once I was off
wheat/corn/beans, that the problems became worse with consumption of
tomatoes, pepper, and eggplant. I can eat a little pepper or the occasional
tomato, but in any quantity they bother me a great deal.
