Thanks for your responses, folks.  You bet I'm gonna be a good girl from now
on.  My first thought was the diet coke too, mostly because I never ever
drink the stuff and it tasted really 'alien'...there truly was nothing else
but beer, wine or booze and I was thirsty...next time I'll bring some water
or juice or something.  The sauce from the pheasant also had a funny
'metallic' taste that maybe was some kind of meat tenderiser or something.
Anyway, I learned my lesson.
