Depends!  If the board only takes Intel CPU s Katmai core you can't
just put a "Coppermine" Core CPU in it.

Modern CPUS are multiplier clock locked and IGNORE the jumpers. Your
board however might anyway not be able to provide a close enough
voltage.
We would have to know the exact Brand, Model and Revision of MoBo.
The devil is in the details.

Of course you can most likely use a Powerleap Slotket to put in a
socket 370 CPU

 or just maybe depending ...an Abit Slotket 2 or Asus Slotket

In some cases as with old Pentium CPUs it is possible to underclock as
 you describe,.

As for if the Slot One 550E MHz 256k cache is Katmai core
If the board is not "Coppermine ready"  it won't take a 550 or above
with 512k cache even if it is Slot One.
