Actually, these boards typically provide two connectors, 1 50-pin
(narrow) and 1 68-pin (wide). We always connect the 50-pin to a
header in a bracket giving us an HD-50 external connector, and use
the wide connector for internal devices (generally the hard
drive(s)).
The 50-pin header is only a couple of bucks. On the few machines
where we also lead the 68-pin connector to the outside, for an
external RAID array, the cost of the header was negligible in the
context of the system.

Good point. And the flip side is that you can postpone buying SCSI
until you need it....
