Active Directory is the LDAP-based network service that replaces NT
4.0's "domain" system.

Under NT 4.0, a seerver could only function as a "domain
controller" if appropriate options were chosen during installation of
the OS. I'm not certain whether this is also true with Windows 2000
and Active Directory.

I have several books about Active Directory; I'm not yet at a point
where I'm ready to recommend any of them to others.
