Instead of going at the angle of a peripheral problem you simply just might
have an overheating issue. What you are describing sounds like a classic
case of overheating.
While the computer is running check the power supply fan , the CPU fan, and
any extra fans installed to verify that all are still operatig normally.
High intensity graphic cards generate a significant amount of heat and
without proper ventillation BINGO you get the symptoms described.

I have a Soyo 6VCA m/b with a Herc geforce256 DDR vid card in a system that
has been rock solid for over a year. I restarted the computer, and it
worked for a bit, then did a hard lockup on me...no keyboard, no mouse, had
to hold the power button in for 5 seconds to shut it down. Restarted,
worked for a bit, then same result, restarted one more time and only got a
black screen..
