I had the same problem, and eventually licked it by slowing down the burn to
2X.  After that I just copied stuff to my hard drive from which I could copy
at the full 8X. Check HP's manual to see if the CD-RW should be the master.
My Plextor 8X4X32 must be the master according to Plextor.  They say it will
not burn at specs if it isn't.  Check the manual.

Sounds like you have DMA enabled (as in UDMA66) but do not have the
80-connector cable on the IDE channel, secondary in this case.  Either
disable DMA for the CD or use an 80 connector cable.  I don't know if that
will help with the burning, but it should get rid of that error message.
For the burning, have you tried copying to the hard drive first?  That may
help with the buffer underrun.
