I have not had much success with Partition Magic. When I had trouble, it
reported that there was a problem, but would not fix it. I ended up learning
more than I wanted to know about partition tables and then fixed it manually
myself.
You can use Norton Disk Editor in partition edit mode, or get Ransh
Partition Manager (sort-of freeware). Both these tools helped me, but I used
Hex Workshop 3.1 to actually patch the partition. Hex Workshop is a
wonderful disk editor (better than Norton's), but it is shareware (about
$50, but worth it).
Here is a link explaining the partition table:

I also did a write-up on partition tables for my classes. If you want it, I
can send it to you as a Word document.

I've done what I thought was a clean install of Win98, defragged it
afterwards to ensure all was well, run Norton’s 2000 Win Doctor to check and
fixed a few minor errors. Then I went to image the drive with PQ Drive Image
when it reported that there were errors on the Partition Table. I ran Norton
’s Disk Doctor and it reported the same. It advised against trying to fix
the problem but I had a go anyway. It then reported that it could not repair
the damage.
