I believe that Intel has patented the Slot 1 technology, so AMD, perhaps,
does not want to pay the license fees.

I have also heard that AMD and others are getting together to design
their own new slot technology, since the socket 7 is inadequate for
future designs.

I do not think that the implication that Intel does not care for its
customers simply because it went to Slot 1 is fair; new technology
is continually replacing old technology and nobody should know that
better than we pcbuilders.

Certainly, however, someone with a socket 7 motherboard who
is considering upgrading should consider  the cheaper
option of an AMD cpu if his/her motherboard will support it.
